Exploring Purpose for Forums
There are a variety of benefits for discussion forums when used as an instructional strategy in the classroom. However, the sucess of the discussion forum depends on the clarity of the expectations and purpose for the forum. When the purpose is clearly established, teachers can plan the design, facilitation and assessment. The purpose may change througout the year but must always be clearly communicated.
There are three basic forums:
- Social Forums
- Instructional Forums
- Collective Knowledge Forums
